I just finished praying about doing a supervisor training this
morning, and how to help them feel like what they are doing is important. The first
verse of this chapter is about King Benjamin making a record of those who had entered
into the covenant. I couldn’t believe it! And then the footnote is to D&C 128:8
about how what you record on earth shall be recorded in heaven. When we make these
sacred records we are creating the books out of which we will be judged. What an
amazing gift of having the priesthood on the earth, and what a responsibility!
Verse 3 is another important leadership principle. King Benjamin
helped the people to see the importance of what he wanted to do, taught by the Spirit,
created a record where people officially committed and then organized the effort
and assigned future tasks to keep it going.
It seems important, too, that Moroni specifically took time to
say they returned in their families. It has stood out to me a lot lately how important
our families are in this work, and how important what I am teaching my boys at home
is. There is so much power and strength in families.
I am amazed that Mosiah was 30 when he became king. That is a
lot of responsibility at a young age. Do we underestimate or expect too little of
people? If someone became a bishop, or a mayor or anything a that age we would be
amazed and it would be a big deal. Sometimes I think I expect too little from my
kids because of their ages, especially when it comes to teaching them to work. It
is hard for me to know what is fair to expect and what is too much or too little.
I guess it goes back to following the Spirit and doing the best I can.
